Ford, GM score well in survey on dependability

The Cadillac brand scored far better than the industry average of 155 problems per 100 vehicles over the three-year period, but GMC and Chevrolet scored worse than average. Land Rover finished last with 255 problems per 100 vehicles during the period.

Sargent said GM’s performance in the study is likely to improve over the next several years because the company has made manufacturing improvements that are not showing up yet on the long-term study. “We’ve seen substantial improvements for all of four brands they are keeping,” Sargent said. “They are heading in the right direction.”

According to J.D. Power, quality and the perception of quality are the most influential factors for car buyers. Also, brands that perform well in the study tend to have higher resale values.

In the past, Toyota has typically outperformed all other manufacturers, but its dominance is less evident this year.

2009 Los Angeles Auto Show

If the North American auto show season has an official kickoff party, the Los Angeles Auto Show is it. In addition to world debuts of the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe, 2011 Toyota Sienna and VW Up! Lite Concept, the 2009 LA Auto Show again played host to the Green Car of the Year announcement, which went to a diesel car for the second year in a row. The LA Auto Show is also a first chance to see and touch the cars unveiled around the world in the eight months since the New York Auto Show, which this year included jaw-droppers like the 2011 Lexus LFA and 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.
